RADIO
ACTIVE

Graduate project from Edinburgh College of Art.

As an animator and designer, my interests lie in creating dark atmospheres, creatures, visual effects and merging digital and practical techniques. This drove my final year work, where I designed a fictitious glowing virus spread into the physical world by radioactive bugs.

'Radioactive' is the result of this and combines textural, tactile cave 'sets', 3D animation and projection mapping techniques to simulate an infected, underground environment.

The process involved mapping out the spider animation and path of action in 3D animation software, Maya, and exporting the individual frames into After Effects to adjust colour, add flicker effects and test the composition (this stage often needed repeated several times). The sequence would then be projected onto the physical set/objects on a loop using a mini projector and adjusted accordingly. The final shot would then be captured frame by frame in Dragonframe using a DSLR camera and dark lighting.
